Booking A Harry Potter Tour of Oxford

To make sure your Harry Potter themed tour of Oxford, involves as much magic as possible there are a few points to cover.

Divinity School

As part of the Bodleian Library and the first purpose-built lecture rooms at Oxford, this is a great addition.

Any planned closures are posted here, so check that they do not affect your visit. If they do we will work around them.

New College

Despite its name, there is nothing “new” about this enchanting site – New College was founded in 1379! This college was chosen as a Harry Potter filming site for its beautiful cloistered environments and old Medieval buildings, so this is a great opportunity to get inside one of Oxford’s most beautiful and historic locations.

Please note that large group bookings (over 20 in size) will be limited to visits after 2 pm only and must have a recognised leader. We strongly advise that these groups pre-book to avoid disappointment!

Christ Church

Well known for the hall which would inspire the Hogwarts (note not the actual hall), along with a familiar looking stairwell. The most expensive College at Oxford to visit, and one of the few colleges with its own gift shop; it is possible to do a very good Harry Potter tour without it. It can also get extremely busy, leading to groups being shunted around in packs, continually being asked to move on and no tours can be conducted inside (audio headsets only). Arranging tickets is best done direct with the college.

Our Advice

Out of the options, we recommend New College, one of the oldest colleges at Oxford and Divinity School, part of the world famous Bodleian Library. These are both stunning sites, and it is easy to understand why they made the cut. These are also more suitable for most people’s budgets. The main point of fame for Christ Church is the hall, which was the inspiration for the filming (note, not the actual hall). This looks very similar to most colleges halls – notably New College; including layout, portraits, large dining tables, High Table, etc – minus the expense and the annoying entry procedure, and the fact that at New College, your guide can actually speak with you!

If you are visiting New College and Divinity, payment for these can be done in person on the day (the best way in case your group numbers change). For Christ Church, you should contact them direct to arrange entrance, this is due to the requirements they have when accepting groups – just let us know the time slot they give you.
