Oxford’s History of Science Museum houses an outstanding collection of scientific instruments from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. It was built to display Elias Ashmole’s collection of scientific instruments and the original idea behind the museum was to provide the public with new information about natural sciences, a new field blossoming in the 17th century.
The building itself is known as the Old Ashmolean Building to distinguish it from the newer Ashmolean Museum building completed in 1894. It houses a range of unique artifacts including:
- Einstein’s Blackboard, which he used in 1931 during his visiting lectures at Oxford
- a collection of mechanical clocks illustrating the development of horology
- the Rochester Avionic Archive, which includes avionics from the Elliot Brothers and Marconi
