Ultimate Guide to the best Restaurants in York
With so much history in York – you are going to be tired after a York Walking Tour. So, make sure you reward yourself accordingly with one of the best restaurants in York
Fine Dining
In terms of quality, ingenuity and deliciousness – it’s hard to think of a restaurant in York that surpasses Melton’s. Boasting a cultivated modern european menu, featuring ingredients sourced from the local area, Melton’s has been a staple of the York dining scene for years.
There’s plenty of classic British flavours on display, mixed up with modern international ingredients – from the Rare Breed Beef served with a lovage emulsion to the pickled shimeji mushrooms that complement the excellent Hake with a Hazelnut crust. Offering a starter and main at lunch for £30, a meal at Melton’s will hardly break the bank, and is perfect for a seasonal special occasion on your visit to York.

Next on our list of the best restaurants in York is a seriously inventive place. Skosh specialises in serving small plates and snacks which, while they won’t break the waistline of your trousers, will certainly get your taste buds going. Claiming to offer “modern british food with an international influence”, the sheer variety of Skosh’s dishes is so exciting it’s enough to bring one out in a rabid fever: from Japanese inspired okonomiyaki dishes to devastating chocolate bombes, we were literally frothing at the mouth and convulsing violently on the floor throughout the meal! We would recommend ordering 5 dishes between two people for a good feed.

Street Food
Next on our list of the best restaurants in York is a delicious cheap eat. Locals and residents alike go wild for Stam and Maria Greek Street Food and it’s easy to see why: serving unpretentious souvlaki (a greek style of flatbed kebab) at affordable prices complete with chips and delicious meat. Leave all of your past kebab shop experiences behind you and check out what this place is all about. Yum!

Next on our list of the best restaurants in York is a contemporary pub serving a delicious menu of seasonal delights. The Star Inn the City has won wide acclaim for its modern takes on pub classics, including inventive prawn cocktails and sausage rolls (served, of course, with duck breast and a dark cherry reduction) . The setting is fantastic too, directly by the river ouse. It’s a fantastic place to pop in for a pint and then get tempted by a meal.

Contemporary Pub
Last but certainly not least on our list of the best restaurants in York is another incredible pub. Serving up a delicious menu that focuses on world famous Yorkshire beef, the Whippet has been delighting locals and visitors for years.
If staying for a meal, we strongly recommend ordering a strong Yorkshire stout to prepare you for the mountain of meat that’s about to follow. The Chateaubriand is particularly excellent, charred to perfection, and served with a pleasing accompaniment of chips, sauces and veggies.
The views are also stunning as the pub looks out directly onto the river. The perfect place to while away the hours, drinking beer and watching the river flow mellifluously by outside. Lovely stuff!
