Ely Cathedral is one of the most impressive Cathedrals in the world and is only a short drive north of Cambridge. It’s a vast building with over 1400 years of history to discover. The town is also well worth the trip in of itself and you could happily spend the whole day in Ely.
The Cathedral is the longest in the country, measuring 537ft and the West Tower is 237ft high. The town of Ely hosts Oliver Cromwell’s house and The Kings School Ely, which claims to be the oldest boarding school in the country.
There is plenty to do in Ely Cathedral. Sites include: The Octagon Tower, climbing the 288 steps up the West Tower with beautiful views across Ely, The Lady Chapel and the stain-glass museum. You can always have tea&scones in the cafe or listen to the choir at evensong. Evensong takes places every day at 5:30pm and 4pm on Sundays. A fun day out for all ages!
