The Eagle is one of the best pubs in Cambridge, if not the whole country, and well worth popping into as part of your trip to Cambridge! Originally opened in 1667 as ‘The Eagle and Child’, the pub is steeped in history:

• It was a popular lunch destination for university staff, and thus became the Local pub of Francis Crick and James Watson. On the 28th February 1953, Crick interrupted patrons’ lunchtime to announce that he and Watson had “discovered the secret of life” after they had constructed their model of the DNA.
• Watson and Crick worked over lunch in the Eagle to draw up a list of the 20 canonical amino acids. This has been a very influential discovery in molecular biology, and it was a key development in understanding the protein-coding nature of DNA.
• The Eagle also has an RAF bar at the back, where fighter pilots, stationed near Cambridge during WW2, have written their names and squadron numbers on the ceiling.

They serve traditional British Pub food and a fine selection of ales, including one called “Eagle’s DNA”
