The Museum of Archeology and Anthropology on Downing Street is well worth a visit on any day and especially a rainy one! The museum was founded in 1884 as ‘The University’s Museum of General and Local Archaeology’ with many artifacts from the South Pacific. Since then, the collection has been expanded to include a wide range of objects humans have used to shape our civilisations. The museum’s fascinating archeological and anthropological artefacts include:
- a 14 meters tall totem pole from the Queen Charlotte Islands in Canada
- freeze-dried potatoes from Peru that are at least 500 years old
- Samurai armour from Japan complete with a moustache made of boar’s bristles
- a skeleton of a Roman woman, which inspired Sylvia Plath’s poem, ‘All the Dead Dears’
Not only is this museum completely free, but the its special exhibits and events will show you something new every time you pay it a visit. The main entrance on Downing Street is accessible to wheelchair users and there is a lift for visitors. The Museum also has accessible toilets and baby changing facilities. While it does not have a restaurant or a cafe, but there is one nearby at the Museum of Zoology, on the other side of Downing Street.
