The Scott Polar Research Institute also known as The Polar Museum, was founded in 1920 by Frank Debenham, an Emeritus Professor of Geography. It was intended as a national memorial to Captain Scott and his team, who died during their return journey from the South Pole.
Its exhibits and displays investigate a wide range of topics pertaining to the Arctic and Antarctic. They go beyond issues covered by the environmental sciences and introduce visitors to the Arctic’s connection to both the social sciences and the humanities. The highlights of their collection include:
- Fossil ferns from approximately 140 million ago
- A folding camera used by Robert Falcon Scott at the South Pole, 191
- A reindeer-skin sleeping bag used by Captain Lawrence Oates during his journey to the South Pole
- An unopened tin of pemmican taken from the hut of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09
