Top of our list of the best cafes in Cambridge is Indigo Cafe. Tucked away on St Edwards Passage, just off Kings Parade is the friendliest cafe in town. Emanating individuality and quirkiness at every turn, Indigo is a small student-run cafe that serves delicious, organic, home-made food. Hot drinks are served in mugs you’d expect to find at your nan’s house and the decor is just like that too!
The food is made the way you like it. Often a student will run up to you after your order, just to check if you have any special preferences. Furthermore the staff even memorise your regulars orders and its a wonderful surprise when the barista gets it spot on!
There is a cash-only rule, which seems bizarre but it’s actually a very kind gesture indeed! They often say you can pay whenever you have the money. This is a god-send to many cash-strapped students in desperate need of their morning caffeine. On a daily basis they also make paninis or coffee for the local homeless. It’s genuine, kind gestures like these, in such short supply these days, that do wonders to bring the community together.

The cafe is set inside St Michael’s Church, which has been around since 1323. It has a unique an interesting history, being once part of Michaelhouse College which Henry VIII merged together with 2 other colleges to form Trinity. Michaelhouse Cafe opened in 2002 and serves generous portions of delicious, organic, wholesome food. Their bacon sandwiches are undoubtedly the best in Cambridge and the home-made cakes are scrumptious. It can get very busy around lunchtime and the noise can be deafening inside the echoey church. It is also a little pricey these days but the portions are generous to make up for it. The timings are geared towards students, it opens at 8am and closes at 5pm and is closed on sundays. Well-worth a visit for the experience of eating in a church alone, Michaelhouse is at its best after a brisk walk in the winter cold.

The famous Fitzbillies is popular for a reason but might have suffered from over-popularity of late. It gets very busy on weekends and service can be slow! However It still serves its signature chelsea buns and does a cracking full english so it’s well worth a visit. I would definately go for the traditional experience and amazing food. Perfect for newcomers to Cambridge.

An Italian gem in the heart of Cambridge and oh boy is the food good! The pizza, the cannoli, the foccaccia, the lasagne…all of it is utterly delicious. A perfect little place for lunch, if not for the fact it’s so busy around that time! Try and avoid the mad rush at 1pm if you can. The coffee is as good as the best in Italy and the service is always energetic and friendly. In the evening it becomes a quiant little place for an aperitif. We’re definately a little bit in love with this place!

Cafe Blue Sage is a friendly, cosy, mediterranean haunt. Homemade, healthy food makes it the perfect place for lunch, (the hummus is some of the best i’ve ever tasted). The service is always really inviting and they’ll happily let you sit there for an hour or two. A lovely atmosphere, we can see why this is the top rated cafe in cambridge on tripadvisor.
