Top of our list of the best pubs in Cambridge is The Eagle pub where, in 1953, Crick and Watson announced “we have found the secret of life”. The secret was the double-helix structure of DNA! Crick and Watson went on to win the nobel prize in 1962, alongside Maurice Wilkins. You can sit in the very seat where they would meet to discuss their theories over a pint. Opened in 1667 as the ‘Eagle and Child’, it originally served as coach-house for tired travellers. Make sure you check out the famous RAF Bar at the back of the pub, where airmen during WW2 wrote their names on the walls. The ales are some of the best around and it serves traditional British pub food. It’s worth a visit though for the history alone and it definitely has an authentic Cambridge atmosphere!

The Flying Pig is a quirky pig-themed pub serving a lip-smacking selection of local beers. The pub is named after the previous owner, known as Mick the Pig, who had a pilot’s license. Pig-paraphonelia lines the walls and pigs heads adorn the vast array of beer taps. In the evening the tables are lit by long candle-sticks and bearded bikers mutter conspiratorially in the dark corners. This is where you’d expect to find Aragorn or Gandalf, definately not any sappy Cambridge students. Live music plays on tuesday, thursdays and saturdays and is a good way to get to know the local crowd. If you hoped to meet some of Cambridge’s quirkiest characters then this is your best bet! The pub lives up to its motto: In hog we trust.

A traditional English pub with an excellent Thai Restaurant at the back. You can stop by for a pint or a pad thai (but one usually follows the other). The green curry is delicious, as is the roast pork. Friendly service and great value, one of our favourite Footprints haunts!

Establish 120 years ago, The Free Press was originally a printing press for a free Cambridge paper. Unfortunately the venture wasn’t very profitable and quickly converted into a cosy boozer, with a roaring fire. It’s a welcoming back-street pub with a fine selection of local ales and hearty home-cooked food.

The Mill is a lovely little pub by The Mill Pond. If you want an authentic Cambridge experience grab a pint from The Mill and sit on the bridge watching punters getting their boats ready and cows grazing in the meadows. The food isn’t great but there’s an excellent ale selection and the service is always upbeat and friendly. Afterwards head for a stroll down the river or wander round Queen’s College and the mathematical bridge.
