The Bate Collection is a true gem for music lovers! It houses the most comprehensive collection in Britain of European woodwind, brass and percussion. They also have more than a dozen historical keyboard instruments and a complete bow-maker’s workshop. Their treasures include:
 

• a collection of saxophones which chart the life of the instrument from its original first incarnation to its bizarre novelty forms
• a number of less well known bowed string instruments including viola d’amore and a 5-stringed quinton
• multiple serpents, which are early bass wind instruments, descended from the cornett and distant ancestors of the tuba
