Ultimate Guide to The Shambles
The Shambles is one of the most iconic areas of York. To help you with your trip, we’ve put together the ultimate guide to The Shambles! Enjoy.
The Shambles is one of York’s most popular tourist destinations, consisting of a gorgeous cobbled street lined with beautiful Elizabethan buildings. The market today consists of a variety of shops and eateries, but in the past this was a street of butchers, where the people of the city would get their meat. Imagine the cobbles of the street running red with blood from animals chopped up and served over the counter. In fact, the word ‘shamble’ is believed to be derived from the Old English word for a stall on which meat or fish was displayed for sale and then cut and portioned! You can definitely spend an hour threading your way through the various shops and eateries. Wonderful!
